README

Dataset Title

Win-Win Agricultural Areas Dataset (1 km² resolution grid)

Purpose

This dataset supports the analysis presented in the [Policy Brief Title], examining the effects of targeted de-intensification on agricultural greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity, and economic output across the EU.

It enables spatially explicit identification of so-called “win-win” areas — grid cells where emissions can be reduced and biodiversity improved with minimal economic loss.

Spatial Coverage

  • Region: European Union (EU)
  • Grid resolution: 1 km²
  • Coordinate columns: x, y (projected spatial grid)

Source Data and Models

  • LUM Geodatabase (2018)
  • EPIC model (D5.1)
  • GLOBIOM livestock and crop parameters
  • PREDICTS database (D5.2)
  • Eurostat apro_cpshr dataset (2016–2021)
  • FAOSTAT producer prices (2016–2021)
  • Exchange rate: 0.95 USD to EUR

Indicator Construction Summary

1. Agricultural Revenue Indicator

  • Combines arable crop and pasture outputs valued in EUR.
  • Yields simulated via EPIC model; prices from FAOSTAT.
  • Crop-type shares derived from Eurostat; livestock output from GLOBIOM.

2. GHG Emissions Indicator

  • Crop-related: Nitrogen input and soil organic carbon loss.
  • Livestock-related: Enteric fermentation, manure management (GLOBIOM).
  • Converted to CO₂-equivalents using standard IPCC factors.

3. Biodiversity Indicator

  • Based on Biodiversity Intactness Index (BII).
  • Calculated using PREDICTS-derived response functions for land-use classes.
  • Area-weighted per 1 km² pixel.

Definition of “Win-Win” Areas

A pixel is classified as win-win if all the following conditions are met under a hypothetical de-intensification scenario:

  • ≥ 1 ton/ha reduction in GHG emissions
  • ≥ 1 % improvement in BII
  • ≤ €350/ha loss in agricultural revenue
